If you think good posture means only standing straight to look the best then you are wrong. It is also important for your health. Bad posture may lead to various serious health conditions. Posture is how you hold your body. It can be of two types: dynamic and static. Dynamic posture is the way you hold your body when moving like walking or bending. Static posture is the way you hold your body when idle, that is, sleeping, standing, or sitting. You need to have both dynamic and static posture.

You need to focus on the position of your spine. There are three natural curves in the spine; the mid-back, low back, and neck. You need to maintain all these curves for a good posture. Your head must be above the shoulders.

How can posture affect health?
If you have bad posture you will be slouching or slumping over. Over time this can lead to misalignment of the musculoskeletal system. It will make the spine more fragile and it may get injured easily. You may have back, shoulder, and neck pain. Your body flexibility will decrease. You won’t be able to keep proper balance while standing or walking. It will also make it difficult to breathe and digest food.

How can you improve posture?
You must be mindful of your posture while doing different activities like sitting, standing, or walking. If you slouch just pull back your shoulder. You must stay active and do exercises like tai chi and yoga. These exercises focus on body awareness and so can improve your posture. These exercises also strengthen your core. You should get rid of the extra calories from your body to improve your posture. Extra weight weakens the abdominal muscles and can hurt the spine and pelvis. It can lead to lower back pain as well. You must always wear comfortable shoes; otherwise, it will hurt your spine.

You shouldn’t sit in the same position for a long time. Switch positions and go for short walks. Stretch your muscles whenever possible and relax the shoulders. You should always keep the elbows close to your body and the back fully supported when sitting.

When standing, you should stand tall and straight with the shoulders back. Pull the stomach in and put your weight on the balls of the feet. By practicing sitting and standing this way you will soon improve your posture.
